Redistricting, or drawing new voting district boundaries, occurs every ten years based on U.S. Census data. Both political parties are known to engage in “gerrymandering,” the practice of drawing those boundaries for political advantage. North Carolina recently made national news when the legislature’s gerrymandered map was rejected by the state’s Supreme Court.
