The US House of Representatives is to vote this week(3/31-4/4)on the SAVE ACt.
The stated purpose of the bill is to prohibit noncitizens from voting. It is already illegal for noncitizens to vote. The SAVE ACT would require more specific documents to vote—beyond the current voter ID. A birth certificate with the voter’s current name on it, a passport or naturalization papers would be acceptable. The documents would need to be shown in person to register to vote or to update a change in address for voting.
These new requirement would affect millions of married women who have traditionally changed their names to their husband’s after marriage. Their birth certificates no longer show their current name. This bill could burden military voters, tribal voters and rural voters. The bill would make it harder for survivors of natural disasters, like those affected by Hurricane Helene, to vote if these documents have been lost. This bill also removes online voting registration and online registration updates.
