1965 Voting Rights Act Signed into Law

The Voting Rights Act of 1965 was signed into law on August 6, 1965 by President Lyndon B. Johnson.  The law prohibits racial discrimination in voting.  While African Americans had the right to vote, suppression was rampant. With the passage of this law, African American women finally achieved the right to vote that was guaranteed by the 19th Amendment.
