Redistricting Day of Action

Interested in learning more: National Fair Maps Link our Information link here

North Carolina’s legislature will redraw our legislative and congressional districts in the coming months. Now is the time to press for the adoption of a fairer, more open process with clear criteria to limit gerrymandering.  It is too late to get an independent commission in place for this year (it requires an amendment to the state constitution), but it is not too late to let legislators know that voters must be included in the map-drawing process.

The day’s program (via Zoom) will include a call to action by current and former legislators, training on what to say when you call, ongoing support to callers, and a wrap-up conversation with some of our legislators. Phone calls are preferred, but participants also have the option of sending postcards.

Sign up to participate here and encourage your friends to do likewise. Both League members and non-members are welcome! Let’s show them we want fair maps!

This event is open to all NC League Members

Join LWV-Wake for a guided discussion of David Daley’s Ratf**ked: The True Story Behind the Plan to Steal America’s Democracy. The book describes the extreme gerrymandering that characterized the 2011 redistricting cycle in NC and other states. Our discussion will focus on lessons learned and how we as citizens can advocate for a fairer, more transparent process in 2021. This is a great read if you need inspiration to fight for fairer maps in 2021. Ratf**ked is available at booksellers.

Library Program Showcases Women’s Suffrage in NC October 9, 2020 NEWTON – As the Catawba County Library partners with local organizations to mark the centennial of women’s suffrage in the United States, it’s offering programs to tell the story and invite the community’s participation. On Wednesday, October 14, at 6 pm, the library will host a live Zoom seminar called You Have to Start a Thing, which highlights the struggles and successes of the suffrage movement in North Carolina at the turn of the 20th century. Receive the Zoom invitation by emailing share@catawbacountync.gov. RaeLana Poteat, curator of political and social history at the North Carolina Museum of History in Raleigh, will present the talk, which is based on an exhibit featuring men and women involved in both sides of the fight for voting equality. The exhibit also documents the role women of color played in the movement and looks at the gradual acceptance of women into positions of political power. The exhibit is notable for its focus on events in North Carolina, which differed from the national movement. It also provides photographic glimpses of the people who were involved and shares speeches, letters, articles, and propaganda from the period. The name of the exhibit comes from a comment by legislator Lillian Exum Clement, who said in 1921, “I want to blaze a trail for other women. I know that years from now there will be many other women in politics, but you have to start a thing.” Catawba County’s suffrage centennial events will continue into 2021 and will include a series of presentations that put the movement into a local context. The project is supported by a grant from the United Arts Council of Catawba County. Partner organizations include the Hickory Museum of Art, Catawba Valley Community College, the Hickory Public Library, the Historical Association of Catawba County, and the League of Women Voters of Catawba County.

(Sponsored by Common Cause NC)

Round out the Day of Action in this live webinar on the latest updates on how the COVID-19 pandemic is impacting elections in North Carolina and nationally – and what we can do to ensure voting is safe, secure and accessible for all.

Ways to Take Action | Before May 27

In response to the COVID-19 crisis, NC House lawmakers filed emergency election legislation on Friday, May 22. As drafted, House Bill 1169 would relax some poll worker recruitment requirements, reduce vote-by-mail witness requirements to one, and provide a modest financial match to release critical, federal election funds to our counties. While HB1169’s common-sense proposals would make it easier for some to cast a ballot amid the pandemic, it ignores other key bipartisan recommendations provided months ago that would protect even more voters, including at-risk Black and Brown communities. Amendments to HB1169 are immediately needed in the House Elections and Ethics Committee to expand voter protections, and ensure this vital legislation does more to keep all of our state’s voters safe during the 2020 elections. ACT NOW: Tell House Elections and Ethics Committee to expand HB1169 >>
