LWV NC Healthcare Action Team Want to join contact by November 5th

For many months, a small group of members from various local Leagues has been meeting informally to focus on healthcare public policy issues, including universal healthcare, Medicaid expansion, social determinants of health, racism in health care policy, and rural health.  In response to LWVNC’s renewal of its support and oversight of League Action Teams (LAT), the healthcare group decided now was the time to formally re-establish itself as a statewide Healthcare LAT.

The Covid-19 pandemic laid bare already existing inequities in our healthcare system.  As our country deals with the health and economic disasters of Covid-19, it is imperative that Leagues in North Carolina build capacity now so that we, as  LWV members, are informed, educated, and prepared to be effective advocates for healthcare reform when the time is right.  To build that capacity, the Healthcare LAT would like to broaden its work statewide by inviting members of other local Leagues to join the team.  Joining the Healthcare LAT at this stage of its development will give you an opportunity to influence its strategy, structure, and areas of interest.  Please join us now!

If you have an interest in advancing LWVNC’s work on healthcare, please contact either Karen Bean at beank@bellsouth.net or Martha Roblee at mroblee@sc.rr.com no later than Friday, November 5.  The next Healthcare LAT meeting, via Zoom, is scheduled for Tuesday, November 9, at 11 a.m.

Organizing Redistricting in NC a Grassroots Effort

Join us to learn how we can organize NC's grassroots for the 2021 redistricting! Fair Districts NC and the League of Women Voters are excited to welcome Tomas Lopez, Executive Director of Democracy NC, and La'Meshia Whittington, Campaigns Director at NC Black Alliance and Deputy Director at Advance Carolina, to discuss how to engage residents across the state in pushing for fair maps. This year, NC will redraw many of its county commissions, city councils, and school boards, maps that can be just as vulnerable to gerrymandering as our legislative and congressional districts. Informing and mobilizing residents across the state will therefore play a critical part in getting fair maps at all levels. The webinar will also premiere our new Fair Counties NC website, a one-stop-shop for information local residents need to get engaged in redrawing county commission districts. The site provides county-specific tools and information on 12 counties especially vulnerable to gerrymandering.

Fair Districts NC Webinar - The New Citizen Toolkit for Redistricting

These days, whatever you want to do, there's an app for it! Join us for a hands-on look at one of the new redistricting apps that puts redistricting into the hands of us voters. We'll look at Princeton's Representable, one of the best of this new breed. Now redistricting is not just for wonks and computer geeks! It's "Power to the People," in the form of free tools that anyone can use (really!). Representable is designed to help community members define their "communities of interest," geographic areas that share economic, cultural, or other ties and should be kept in together when districts are drawn. But these easy-to-use tools can do more than that: they can even be used to draw and submit complete districts, to crowdsource a whole map, or to suggest improvements to whatever the legislature comes up with. Welcome to the new age or citizen-drawn maps!
